High Voltage Switchboard & Protection Upgrades

A typical high voltage switchboard that may have been in service for over twenty years will almost certainly have electromechanical protection relays of various makes and models.

Many of these relays are now obsolete and unserviceable. Most protection panels of this era will also have numerous relays and other devices for each high voltage circuit, each perfoming one particular function and having no fault recording or communication capabilities.

GTS has noted this as an industry wide problem requiring an effective solution. In essence, the upgrade of such protection panels is a necessity in order to ensure continued reliable switchgear operation as an integral part of any industrial operation, production facility or electricity supply organisation. Most protection panels can be replaced with a similar panel to match the existing switchgear, and more importantly, fitted with a state-of-the-art microprocessorbased protection relay. In most cases, a single protection relay will be able to replace all the old relays and perform all required protection functions, as well as having the capability to interface with communications systems already in place to effect remote monitoring and control of the switchgear.

Modern protection relays also feature additional options such as digital input/output logic analogue outputs and font panel displays of all power measurements such as kW kVAr, kVA, PF, Volts, Current and kWh. They also feature internal fault logging, which is a valuable tool when investigating protection trips, monitoring CB operations as well as power system disturbances.

GTS has the capability to carry out the entire upgrade, including the design (panel arrangement, schematic and termination drawing modifications), supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the completed upgrade.
